Miles Davis, trumpet Herbie Fields, clarinet, tenor sax Teddy Brannon, piano Al Casey, guitar Leonard Gaskin, bass Eddie Nicholson, drums Rubberlegs Williams, vocal. Why isn't there a sonically definitive version of this great and historic material in the modern age? People argue about the sound on various more recent digital issues, with no consensus.1945 (age 19) Rubberlegs Williams With Herbie Fields' Band The vinyl edition of Kind of Blue that's my vinyl go-to for the album is the old Classic Records twofer with the speed corrected side one and the original speed side one and the outtakes and the Quiex vinyl.īirth of the Cool I have on an old Capitol LP, and I must say the sound isn't very good. There are vinyl reissues of the original 10-inch LPs now in two RSD box sets, but I haven't heard them. It's great, but it's not really of a piece with the Sonny Rollins album and two takes of it to fill out the album is a little much. The rest of the album is filled out with two takes of "Bag's Groove" with a completely different band from the 10-inch LP Miles Davis All Stars, Vol. All the tracks from the original 10-inch album Miles Davis with Sonny Rollins, are on the 12-inch and they're all great Miles and great Rollins (it features the debut of three now-jazz-standards written by Rollins) plus there's an a second take of one of the piece on there. In terms of LP, I have Relaxin', Cookin' and Bag's Groove on the old OJC vinyl releases and they're great, but they've been reissued so much on LP that there are lots of specialty audiophile options too.īag's Groove is one of those Prestige 12-inchers that had tracks from the sessions for two different albums that were originally released as 10-inchers.

When I think of Miles Davis I think of Miles fronting the '50s quintet stepping up to the mike with the Harmon-muted trumpet to play "My Funny Valentine" or "If I Were a Bell." And Relaxin' and Cookin' are some off my most played albums in any genre across a lifetime of listening to music. But these are the albums I love the most I think. I'm not a fan at all of the post-retirement music.

I like all eras of Miles' music up to the mid-'70s retirement. And and general '50s Miles from all different bands is that the era of Miles music I find myself returning to most. My favorite Miles band is the '50s quintet. These are probably the Miles albums I've returned to and still return to most often.
